Renovations for our Grade II Listed Romanby Memorial Clock Tower - PHASE II
As briefed out earlier this year, work is now underway this year and next for some much-needed TLC for our 98 year-old Memorial Clock Tower, ahead of its centenary in 2027.
The structural survey of the clock tower was completed, and we are pleased to report that the main structure is inherently sound, but there are some detailed works that need to be done to help preserve it for the years ahead.
We have already had the work done to repair and repoint the steps of the clock tower, and now we need to repair masonry on the outside of the tower in several places. The roof will also be over-coated with a lead substitute (such as zinc).
This is why, from today as you will notice, scaffolding is being erected around the tower to allow all this external work to be done in the next couple of weeks. The steps, and this masonry work is being funded through grants we have secured over the last 6 months.
Finally - and separate to the structural aspects, we are still planning to fully restore the clock faces and the 1926 clock mechanism next year - again with grant funding which we are in the process of securing.
We will keep everyone informed as the work progresses across this year and next - with the aim of having the tower and the garden ready for a re-dedication at its 100-year birthday!
Obviously, for safety reasons, we ask everyone to avoid/stay away from the clock tower site/Memorial Garden while this work goes on - we will post signage at the gates to advise this.
Best wishes,
Stuart Bradnam, Chair, RPC, on behalf of your Parish Council Team.
